Engineering Departmental Visitations are open to selected, newly admitted doctoral and masters students for Fall 2009. Students from participating departments must receive an invitation to attend and can select their weekend based on departmental preference. Opportunities to tour departments, meet with faculty, interact with current graduate students, talk to their peers from across the country, partake in social activities, and see the campus/community will be available for students. These visitations are fully funded providing airfare, transportation, hotels, and meals to all student participants. The SAPAI Faculty Prep training will prepare American Indian graduate students in Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics pursuing a teaching career at Tribal Colleges and Universities to assume a faculty position at TCU by offering training in: Grant Writing, Indigenous Leadership, Tribal College infrastructure, and Transition.
SAPAI Faculty Prep training is for you if you are American Indian or Alaska Native, U.S. Citizen, Graduate student who has completed all course requirements of your program with the exception of a thesis or dissertation, Alfred P. Sloan American Indian Graduate Programs student, STEM Graduate Student.
Scholars who have been accepted and attend this training will also be eligible for a one-year placement at TCU with salary provided by SAPAI!

The Department of Chemical & Biomedical Engineering invites applications and nominations for two tenure-track faculty positions (one at the Assistant Professor level and one at the Professor level) starting August 2009. The new faculty members must have earned Ph.D.s in chemical engineering or biomedical engineering or a closely related field. The senior position will provide research and educational leadership for the Biomedical Engineering graduate program and the junior position is in the alternative energy area. This annual event is open to all current and prospective graduate engineering students. The focus of this college-wide event is current graduate student research and admission to doctoral and master's programs. The day-long program features the following opportunities for students:

Travel grants are available for prospective students to attend. A simple online application process is required for travel grant consideration. The first annual Mega Midwest AGEP Conference was held on February 7- 9, 2008 at the Hilton Suites Chicago.

Four Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) program including City University of New York (CUNY)/Michigan Alliance Social & Behavioral Sciences (SBES), Great Lakes Alliances for Social & Behavioral Sciences (SBES), Michigan AGEP Alliance Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), and Midwest Crossroads Alliance Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) combined resources for this event.  

There were over 180 minority graduate students from participating alliances came together for 3 days of professional development and networking.  Students were able to chose between a wide variety of workshops and presentations while interacting with peers from 14 major universities.  There were 13 WSU doctoral students in attendance with 3 faculty/staff presenting workshops at the conference. 

A recruiting fair was part of the conference to present career opportunities seeking postdoctoral and faculty positions.  

This successful event received positive feedback from all attendees on the well planned student and faculty workshops, networking opportunities, and the recruitment of talented future faculty.

Southern Regional Education Board Conference for Minority Students (SREB)
Arlington, VA (October 25-28, 2007)

Each year SREB hosts the Institute on Teaching and Mentoring, a four-day conference that has become the largest gathering of minority doctoral scholars in the country. Now in its 14th year, the Institute gives the issue of faculty diversity a national focus and provides minority scholars with the strategies necessary to survive the rigors of graduate school, earn the doctoral degree and succeed as a member of the professoriate. bullet Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS)
Austin, Texas (November 7-10, 2007)

Formerly known as the MARC/MBRS Symposium, ABRCMS is sponsored by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), Division of Minority Opportunities in Research Program (MORE) and managed by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). In its seventh year, ABRCMS is the largest, professional conference for biomedical students attracting approximately 2,600 individuals, including 1,650 undergraduate students, 280 graduate students, 30 postdoctoral scientists and 750 faculty and administrators. During the three-day conference, many participants are involved in poster and oral presentations in nine sub disciplines in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. The Chicago Graduate and Professional School Fair provides institutions of higher education an opportunity to meet with students from many different schools and degree programs. Last year the fair attracted 700 students, and this year the attendance should increase to over 1,000. The fair is co-sponsored by 22 schools, which most noticeably include: the University of Illinois at Chicago, Northwestern University, DePaul University, and a host of others.     This is an underrepresented prospective engineering PhD student (or masters considering PhD) campus visitation program, including GEM, LSAMP, McNair, and Meyerhoff Scholars. This 3 day event gives students the opportunity to tour departments, interact with faculty, meet with current graduate students, talk to their peers from across the country, and partake in social activities. Preference is given to those seniors and master?s students considering Fall 2007 admission; although juniors will be considered.
    Students are asked to fill out a 1 page online application and submit their unofficial transcripts.  Students participating in PREVIEW automatically attend Graduate Programs Information Day on Nov. 17 in the College of Engineering. This conference will be hosted by Wayne State University's Graduate School.
The theme of the Fall Conference is Diversity in the Classroom.   Program includes:  

  • Panel discussions of faculty experiences in the classroom
  • Classroom scenarios performed by WSU Theater students
  • Video clips of professors of color who discuss the special pressures minority faculty face in majority white institutions

These interactive workshops will prepare graduate students for diversity issues in academic settings. The conference will be hosted at the Gordon H.
