The City University of New York (CUNY), the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University comprise the CUNY/MAA Alliance of the social, behavioral, and economic (SBE) sciences disciplines. This AGEP program recruits, supports and mentors underrepresented minority students in doctoral degree program in the SBE sciences.
Synopsis of Program:
The CUNY/MAA Alliance of the SBE sciences has the broad goal to increase significantly the number of U.S. citizens receiving doctoral degrees in the social behavioral sciences (SBE), with special emphasis on those population groups underrepresented in these fields (i.e., African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders). In addition, AGEP is particularly interested in increasing the number of minorities who will enter the professoriate in these disciplines. The Alliance will accomplish this goal by increasing participation in summer research programs and research opportunities, expanding student support groups, enhancing fellowship support, and coordinating skill-building workshops to help ensure graduate study success for social science students.
Specific objectives of the AGEP program are (1) to develop and implement innovative models for recruiting, mentoring, and retaining minority students in SBE doctoral programs, and (2) to develop effective strategies for identifying and supporting underrepresented minorities who want to pursue academic careers.
