Wayne State University Diversity Programs Mission

Our mission is to promote and maintain programs that support initiatives enhancing minority student retention and academic excellence.  WSU Diversity Programs work closely with other campus departments, faculty, and staff to develop a climate in which cultural diversity is valued, appreciated, and accepted.  All support services focus on facilitating leadership skills, graduation, applying to and attending graduate school, and entry into professional and academic careers.  Wayne State’s Diversity Programs staff members devote their time and energy to the retention and graduation of minority-enrolled students.

On this site you will discover upcoming events, funding resources, research opportunities and various diversity assistance programs.

STUDENT ASSISTANCE

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) (http://www.caps.wayne.edu)

Dissertation Support Groups

Contact Ms. Carole Barduca ( c.barduca@wayne.edu ) for more information.

Writing and completing the dissertation can be the most difficult step in a student’s academic program.  Graduate students frequently experience isolation as their cohorts disperse.  Research indicates that perceived lack of emotional and academic support, anxiety, writer’s block, lonliness, negative self-appraisal, perceived loss of power and control, particularly among male students, are factors that significantly impact program completion.  Retention of graduate students and completion of dissertations can be facilitated by the formation of graduate/dissertation support groups.  Research has also shown that these groups can serve as mediating factors in providing social support and guidance throughout the Ph.D. process. The Graduate School and the Office of Counseling and Psychological Services have sponsored dissertation support groups since January 2003.  The groups meet weekly and the time, place, and duration of the group is determined by the students.
