Handbook for Doctoral Students and Advisors
Ph.D. Requirements for Graduation
Welcome to the Ph.D. Office's web page! The purpose of the  Ph.D. Office is to help admitted doctoral students complete their degree requirements. A general outline of the degree requirements is listed below. For a more detailed description of the requirements, students should consult the Graduate Bulletin from the Student Resource and Assistance Center in the Student Center Building, or in the Graduate School Main Office (Room 4012 F/AB). The Handbook for Doctoral Students and Advisors is available online. Finally, students should also contact their department regarding the core requirements for their degree. Please don't hesitate to contact the Ph.D. Office with any questions or concerns.
Degree Requirements
  • A Doctor of Philosophy Plan of Work form must be submitted to the Ph.D. office no later than completion of 40 credit hours and before the student may achieve candidacy. Students are encouraged to file a Plan of Work after 9 credits have been completed or after the first semester of doctoral work.

  • Candidacy is reached after the Plan of Work has been approved, the final Qualifying Examination has been passed, approximately 50 credit hours have been completed, and the dissertation committee has been named.

  • Students must complete four semesters of candidacy status (9991, 9992, 9993, 9994) before graduating. If four semesters of candidacy status are completed before graduating students may register for candidacy maintenance (9995).

  • A doctoral student must complete an oral exam. This exam may be part of the Qualifying Exam, a prospectus meeting, a lecture or seminar, or some other format approved by the student’s department.  If the oral exam is part of the Qualifying Exam it must be completed within 60 days of the written portion of the exam.

  • A Ph.D. student may register for up to, but not more than 12 credits of pre-doctoral dissertation research (9990)  before becoming a candidate.

  • The dissertation committee director and at least one member must hold a regular Graduate Faculty appointment. Students may verify appointments by consulting the Graduate Faculty Roster.

  • The doctoral student's official dissertation committee is recorded on the Candidacy form and the Prospectus form which is submitted with a dissertation prospectus. Any changes to the committee must be requested in writing. These requests should be submitted to the Ph.D. Office of the Graduate School. The memo should explain the reason for the change in committee. It should also have the signature(s) of the committee member(s) removed, the signature(s) of the committee member(s) added, as well as the signatures of the doctoral advisor and the departmental Graduate Officer.  At least two committee members must hold regular Graduate Faculty appointments. Graduate Faculty Appointment forms and guidelines are available online. http://www.gradschool.wayne.edu/GradFaculty/gradfacultyapp.html
  •

  • A format check of the final draft of the dissertation manuscript must be done at least two weeks prior to the Dissertation Public Lecture - Defense or by the deadline date listed for the current semester. Students should plan to leave the manuscript at least overnight with the Ph.D. Office for the format check. See the templates for format requirements. Corrections will be provided on a comment sheet attached to the manuscript and must be made before the dissertation may be approved.

  • Doctoral forms (Commencement Reply, Microfilm Agreement, and Survey) will be given to the student when the format check has been completed.
