IX. RESEARCH SUPPORT

GRADUATE STUDENT THESIS/DISSERTATION RESEARCH SUPPORT FUND

Graduate students engaged in approved thesis/dissertation research are eligible to apply for a grant intended to defray the necessary but unusual expenses essential to the performance of thesis or dissertation research (not to include the cost associated with the preparation of the thesis or dissertation manuscript itself).

 
Award Limits
  • Awards are limited to a maximum of $1,000 for dissertation research and $500 for thesis projects.  
Eligibility
  • Eligibility is limited to Ph.D. candidates engaged in dissertation research and master's candidates involved in thesis research.  
  • Students must be enrolled in and registered for Wayne State University credits, hold regular graduate student status, and be in good academic standing.  
  • Interested students should plan well in advance when applying for this support.  
Award
  • Even though students may apply for the grant Disbursement prior to the approval of their thesis or dissertation topic, the awards will not be made until the proposed topic is officially accepted and will be approved only prior to the beginning of the actual conduct of research activity for which the support is requested.

GRADUATE STUDENT PROFESSIONAL TRAVEL FUND

In an effort to encourage and support graduate student paper presentation at regional and national conferences, workshops, conventions, etc., the Graduate School has made limited funds available to schools and colleges in the form of the Graduate Student Professional Travel Fund.
Award
  • Awards of up to $200 are made on a competitive basis, with matching support required from the student's department.  
Eligibility
  • Eligible students must be admitted without condition to Wayne State University and be in good academic standing.  
  • Students may receive a maximum of one travel award per fiscal year.

  • Applications are available from and should be submitted to the student’s department.  
Application Deadline
  • Applications must be submitted at least three weeks in advance of the travel date and must be for travel in the current fiscal year  

GRADUATE STUDENT COUNCIL TRAVEL AWARDS

These awards are made available by the Graduate Student Council to encourage graduate students to present their scholarly work at regional and national conferences, workshops, exhibits and similar meetings.

 

Award

  • $200 for travel expenses to conference

  • Departmental matching funds are not required
  • Three award periods during the year

Eligibility

  • Be admitted without condition to a WSU graduate program

  • Be in good academic standing
  • Be registered for the semester in which the application is made 
  • Be presenting scholarly work at a professional meeting
  • Students may receive only one award per year.

Deadlines

  • August 1, for travel in October through January

  • December 1, for travel in February through May
  • May 1 for travel in June through September

SUPPORT FOR GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH DAYS

A few departments and colleges hold Research Days at which the work of graduate students is showcased. Through these, students gain valuable experience for presenting their scholarly work at professional conferences and meetings. The Graduate Student Council hopes to encourage other schools and colleges to sponsor research conferences and artistic expositions by making available funding for Graduate Student Research Days.

 

Events eligible

  • The event should be primarily organized and presented by graduate students

  • The event should provide students with a forum in which to present their work to the University community.
  • The sponsor may be a program, a department a school or college, or a collaboration among several of these

  • Three awards of $500 each
