What is the AGEP Program?

Wayne State University, University of Michigan, Michigan State and Western Michigan comprise the Michigan AGEP Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) Program. The AGEP program recruits, supports and mentors underrepresented minority students who earn doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

Synopsis of Program:
The AGEP program is intended to increase significantly the number of domestic students receiving doctoral degrees in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), with special emphasis on those population groups underrepresented in these fields (i.e., African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders). In addition, AGEP is particularly interested in increasing the number of minorities who will enter the professoriate in these disciplines.
Specific objectives of the AGEP program are (1) to develop and implement innovative models for recruiting, mentoring, and retaining minority students in STEM doctoral programs, and (2) to develop effective strategies for identifying and supporting underrepresented minorities who want to pursue academic careers.

The first annual Mega Midwest AGEP Conference was held on February 7- 9, 2008 at the Hilton Suites Chicago.

Four Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) program including City University of New York (CUNY)/Michigan Alliance Social & Behavioral Sciences (SBES), Great Lakes Alliances for Social & Behavioral Sciences (SBES), Michigan AGEP Alliance Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), and Midwest Crossroads Alliance Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) combined resources for this event.

There were over 180 minority graduate students from participating alliances came together for 3 days of professional development and networking.  Students were able to chose between a wide variety of workshops and presentations while interacting with peers from 14 major universities.  There were 13 WSU doctoral students in attendance with 3 faculty/staff presenting workshops at the conference.

A recruiting fair was part of the conference to present career opportunities seeking postdoctoral and faculty positions.

This successful event received positive feedback from all attendees on the well planned student and faculty workshops, networking opportunities, and the recruitment of talented future faculty.
